-
Climate and clothing: The climate is generally wet, windy,
- and cool. High seasonal winds are common. Warm clothing is
- comfortable most of the year. Raincoats are essential. Seasons
- are reversed from those in the United States. Average
- temperatures in Wellington range from 5 degrees C (41 degrees F)
- to 20 degrees C (68 degrees F); in Auckland from 8 degrees C (46
- degrees F) to 23 degrees C (73 degrees F); and in Christchurch,
- from 1 degree C (34 degrees F) to 22 degrees C (72 degrees F).

-
Customs: Visas are required of U.S. citizens only for
- permanent residence and for visits longer than 90 days. When
- U.S. visitors arrive in New Zealand, they must present a
- passport valid for 6 months longer than intended stay and a
- return or onward passage ticket. Currency may be exchanged at
- international airports, banks, hotels, and certain stores. Pets
- are not permitted entry except after long quarantine periods.
-

- food or drink precautions are needed.
-

-
Telecommunications: Telegraph service to the U.S. is
- excellent. Local and long-distance phone service is good. Phone
- calls to the U.S. need not be booked in advance, and connections
- are usually rapid and clear. Noon eastern standard time in
- Washington, D.C. is 5:00 a.m. next day in Wellington.
-

-
Transportation: Major international airlines serve the
- International Airport at Auckland, and flights are scheduled
- almost daily between Australia and Wellington, Auckland, and
- Christchurch. Air, bus, and rail connections between cities are
- good, and public transportation within cities is ample. Rental
- cars are available.
-
